Virgin Australia Doha flights: Qsuite on a Virgin ticket

Virgin Australia does not fly its own long-haul widebodies, but it sells business class to Doha on Qatar Airways 777s. The flights were suspended for months in 2026 and are now returning in stages. This is how the arrangement works and what to check before booking.

What a wet lease means for your ticket

Virgin Australia's Doha flights are not a codeshare. Under the wet lease, Qatar Airways supplies the aircraft, the pilots and the cabin crew, and Virgin Australia sells the flight under its own name and flight numbers. The plane is a Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300ER. The airline on your ticket is Virgin.

The arrangement exists because Qatar had used up the weekly flights it was allowed into Australia's busiest airports. The federal government did not approve more, so Qatar took a 25 per cent stake in Virgin and Virgin began selling extra Doha capacity. The federal approval for the arrangement covered 28 new weekly return services between Doha and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, which run as Virgin flights under the wet lease.

Virgin has said it may eventually run the route with its own crew, a dry lease, and the airlines committed to consult the union on that no later than three years into the partnership. For now, Qatar flies it.

The business class seat

Australian Frequent Flyer reports that Virgin's business class on the Doha flights is Qatar's Qsuite. That fits the aircraft, though Qsuite is not on every Qatar 777 and is not guaranteed on every aircraft swap. Our guide to what makes Qsuite different covers the door, the centre-pair double bed and why choosing the seat matters.

Two cautions. First, Virgin controls the booking but Qatar controls the aircraft, so equipment swaps are decided on the Qatar side. Check the seat map after booking and again before departure. Second, the centre-pair double bed relies on specific seats in the middle of the cabin. On a Virgin booking you pick from the same seat map, so choose early.

What happened to the flights in 2026

Virgin's Doha flights were grounded from late February 2026 after the outbreak of the 2026 Iran war in the region, which also disrupted Qatar's own schedule and flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They have returned in stages:

CityStatusFrequency
MelbourneReinstated in June 2026One daily Virgin flight in the July 2026 schedule, alongside Qatar's own daily flight
SydneyRestarted in mid-June 2026; second daily flight due from early December 2026One daily, rising to two daily
BrisbaneDue back from early December 2026Three weekly
PerthDue back from early December 2026Four weekly
Virgin Australia Doha services, as reported through September 2026

Those dates come from schedule filings reported in July and from trade coverage in September. Airlines move them, and the Gulf situation has been changeable all year. Confirm each flight on Virgin's own site before building a trip around it.

Why book through Virgin rather than Qatar

The same aircraft can be sold two ways: on a Qatar ticket or a Virgin one. Three things can differ, and they are worth comparing:

  • The fare. The two airlines price independently, so one can be cheaper than the other for the same plane and date. Compare both before you decide.
  • The program. A Virgin booking earns and burns Velocity points. Velocity set its business class award rates for these flights at 119,500 points one way from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and 89,500 from Perth when they launched in 2025, in line with Qatar's own Australia to Doha rates. Check current rates, because award charts move.
  • The conditions. A Virgin ticket carries Virgin's fare rules and Virgin's customer service, even though a Qatar crew flies it. If something goes wrong, you deal with the airline that sold you the ticket. Read the conditions of the fare you buy, not the ones you remember from a Qatar booking.

Doha as a route to Europe

Most people who fly this route are not going to Doha. Virgin sells Doha as a connection point to Europe and beyond on Qatar's network. That makes it a direct competitor to the Hong Kong, Singapore and Gulf routings we cover in our guide to Sydney to London in business class, and to Cathay's retrofitted Aria Suite flights via Hong Kong.

The single-ticket version, with Virgin or Qatar selling the whole journey to London, is protected end to end if it is on one booking: if the first leg runs late, the airline rebooks you. A split ticket, such as an economy flight to an Asian hub plus a separate business ticket onward, or a separate Virgin flight and a separate onward ticket, is not protected. Whether the cheaper price is worth that risk is the question to answer on your own dates. If you would rather skip the connection altogether, Qantas has scheduled a Sydney to London nonstop for October 2027, subject to delivery and certification, covered in our Project Sunrise guide. Look at current business class deals, run your own dates, and compare the connection time as well as the fare.

Qatar says its 777 fleet now has free Starlink Wi-Fi, which is worth knowing if you plan to work through the flight. Our guide to Starlink Wi-Fi on flights from Australia covers what that means and the exceptions.

Common questions

Does Virgin Australia fly its own planes to Doha?
No. The flights are operated by Qatar Airways with its own 777-300ER aircraft and crew under a wet lease. Virgin Australia sells them under its own name and flight numbers, so you book and deal with Virgin while a Qatar crew flies you.
Is Virgin Australia's Doha business class Qsuite?
Australian Frequent Flyer reports that it is, on Qatar's 777-300ERs fitted with Qsuite. Qsuite is not guaranteed if the aircraft is swapped, so check the seat map after booking and again before you travel.
Are Virgin Australia's Doha flights running in 2026?
Partly. The flights were suspended from late February 2026 after the Gulf conflict. Sydney and Melbourne restarted in June, with Brisbane and Perth due back from early December and a second daily Sydney flight due around the same time. Dates can change, so check Virgin's own schedule.
Can I use Velocity points on the Qatar-operated flights?
Yes. They are Virgin Australia flights, so they can be booked with Velocity points. Award rates when the flights launched in 2025 matched Qatar's own Australia to Doha rates, but rates change, so check the current price before you plan around them.
Is it cheaper to book Doha flights through Virgin or Qatar?
Neither is reliably cheaper. The two airlines price the same aircraft separately, so compare both on your dates. Also compare the fare conditions, because a Virgin ticket follows Virgin's rules rather than Qatar's.
