The new Qantas nonstop

Qantas announced in February 2026 that it would fly Sydney to Las Vegas as QF55, the first scheduled nonstop between Australia and Las Vegas. Las Vegas becomes its 101st destination and its eighth city in the Americas, after Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Dallas, New York, Vancouver and Santiago. The flights start on 29 December 2026 and, as announced, run until 12 March 2027 at three flights a week.

It is a seasonal service, so it exists for the northern winter and is currently scheduled to stop in March. Days of operation differ between reports, so confirm which three days a week it flies on the Qantas booking page before you plan around it.

Times are as published at launch by Qantas and the trade press, and may change. The odd arrival on the way out is the date line: you leave Sydney in the evening and land in Las Vegas that same afternoon. The return arrives two calendar days after it leaves, so plan the first day back around that.

The business cabin

The Qantas 787-9 has 42 business seats, 28 premium economy seats and 166 economy seats. The business cabin is laid out 1-2-1, which gives every passenger aisle access, and the seat converts into a fully flat bed. Seat reviews suggest not every seat is equal: window seats tend to have more privacy, and in each centre pair one seat is more open to the aisle than the other. The seat can also vary by individual aircraft, as Qantas is delivering 787-9s with an updated suite. That is worth a look at the seat map before you pay for a fare that lets you choose. Our guide on business class seats compared explains the layouts, and business class vs premium economy helps if you are weighing the next cabin down.

What we could and could not confirm on price

We have not found a published business class fare for QF55 from an airline or Australian trade source that we can put a date and a number against, so we are not printing one. One US site reported in June 2026 that award seats on the new route were scarce, finding only one economy award, which is common for a route with no history, but that is one site's search on one day. It also quoted an early lowest business cash fare of almost $6,300 with the currency unclear, so we have not relied on it.

What can be said is how a new seasonal route behaves. A first-ever route has no price history, so its opening fares are the airline's estimate and are likely to move as the cabin fills. Our guide on when to book long-haul business class covers how premium cabin prices tend to move as a flight fills.

The alternatives to the nonstop

Before QF55, there was no scheduled way to reach Las Vegas from Sydney without landing somewhere else in the US first. Qantas has run nonstop charter flights for NRL tour packages, but they were not on general sale. Connecting is still the option on every day the Qantas flight does not run, and on every date outside its season.

  • Fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco and connect. The Pacific crossing is the business class part of the trip, and the second flight to Las Vegas is a short domestic hop. Check what cabin the domestic leg offers, because on a short flight business class may not be the lie-flat product you paid for on the long one. Our Sydney to Los Angeles guide covers the crossing.
  • Connect through a Pacific hub. Kaviqa prices two-ticket builds that join at Auckland, Christchurch or Nadi where one exists for your dates: an economy flight to the hub plus a separate business ticket on to the US. Whether any of them beats the nonstop depends on the date.
  • Start from another Australian city. Qantas flies QF55 from Sydney only, so from Melbourne or Brisbane the question is whether the domestic flight to Sydney is on the same ticket. If it is not, it carries the usual two-ticket risk.

The nonstop's advantage is plain: one flight, one ticket and no US connection, so no domestic leg and no second airport to clear. Its weakness is that it flies three times a week for about ten and a half weeks. If your dates do not fall on a flight day, the connecting options are what is left. How to fly business class from Australia to the US for less covers why a non-nonstop can price lower.

Before you book

  • Entry. Most Australian passport holders need an approved ESTA or a visa before boarding a flight to the US, and that includes connecting passengers.
  • The season. The service is currently scheduled to end on 12 March 2027, so a return flight after mid-March needs a different routing.
  • Two flights, one trip. If you book the nonstop out and something else back, you hold two tickets. A missed connection on separate tickets is not protected by the airline.
  • The return day. QF56 lands two calendar days after it departs. Book your first day back at work accordingly.
