Melbourne to Helsinki business class on Finnair's new route

Finnair is due to start flying from Melbourne in late October 2026, its first service to Australia, with the first Helsinki departure on 25 October and the first arrival in Melbourne on 26 October. It is a daily Airbus A350 flight that stops in Bangkok before Helsinki, and it gives Melbourne a European option that avoids the Gulf. This page covers the schedule, what the business seat is, how the Bangkok leg can be used by itself, and how to check the price against other routings.

What Finnair is starting

Finnair and Melbourne Airport announced the route on 18 December 2025, subject to government approvals, making Melbourne the airline's first Australian destination. Finnair gave 25 October 2026 as the first flight, leaving Helsinki, and Melbourne Airport gave 26 October. The first departure from Melbourne is therefore expected on or around 26 October. The flight runs between Helsinki and Melbourne via Bangkok, on an Airbus A350, with business class, premium economy and economy. As at 26 October 2026 we have not found a report of the first flight, so check the airline's site for the day you want to travel.

The outbound AY146 leaves Melbourne in the afternoon, reaches Bangkok in the evening and lands in Helsinki early the next morning, around 6am. The return, AY145, leaves Helsinki just after midnight, stops in Bangkok and arrives in Melbourne at about 7:15am the following day. One trade report puts the journey at around 22 hours from Helsinki and 23 and a half from Melbourne, each including a stop of about an hour and three quarters in Bangkok.

Melbourne Airport says that from Helsinki you can connect to about 90 European destinations (Finnair counts 93 in its 2026 network). Helsinki is a hub, and the Bangkok stop is short.

The business class seat

Finnair plans to use its AirLounge business seat on these flights. It is a shell-style seat that does not recline. You raise the leg rest and it forms a flat bed, with cushions to adjust the angle while you sit. Reviewers describe the bed as long and wide, and some find the footwell limits sleep. If you have limited mobility, check the seat before booking. That is a different feel from the 1-2-1 suites on a Qantas 787, so it helps to see the seat before you decide it is for you. Business class seats compared explains the common layouts.

Seat counts vary by aircraft. One trade source lists two A350 configurations with different business cabin sizes, so we are not quoting a number. Check the seat map for the flight you are booking.

Bangkok can be flown on its own

The Melbourne to Bangkok sector is what the industry calls a fifth freedom flight. Finnair, a Finnish airline, is allowed to sell tickets between Bangkok and Melbourne by themselves, as well as through to Helsinki. Mainly Miles describes it as Finnair's only fifth freedom route in the world, and says Finnair is the only oneworld option on the sector, with Thai Airways and Jetstar also serving it.

That matters for anyone building a trip. A Melbourne to Bangkok business ticket is about nine hours, and Bangkok has onward flights to Europe on many airlines. You can buy Finnair for the first leg and a different airline for the second, or keep Finnair all the way. Kaviqa's usual two-ticket build is an economy flight to an Asian hub plus a separate business ticket onward, so business on both legs, as here, is a different option. If you split it, the usual two-ticket trade applies: bags are collected and re-checked, and a delay on the first ticket is yours to carry. Our guide on Melbourne to London in business class, booked as two tickets explains how that works, and Bangkok is one of the Asian hubs it covers.

What the fare is likely to cost

We have not found a published launch fare for business class on the new flight. The best dated reference is indirect. When we checked on 26 October 2026, an Australian specialist agency's undated page listed Finnair business class returns to Helsinki from $8,799 from Melbourne, $9,559 from Sydney, $6,199 from Perth and $6,899 from Brisbane. Those are agency lead-in prices for limited seats outside peak periods, and the page does not say which routing they are for, so they may not be for the new flight. They show that Perth and Brisbane lead-in fares are well below Melbourne's, not what the new flight will cost on your dates.

A new route has no price history. Airlines often open with launch fares and adjust once they see demand, so check it against the alternatives on your dates instead of assuming it will be a deal. The cheapest business class from Australia to Europe lists the other options and the sales reported in October 2026.

Booking it with points

Finnair belongs to oneworld, so the flight can be booked with partner programs such as Qantas, British Airways and Cathay. Point Hacks wrote this up in February 2026, shortly after bookings opened. Its main practical points still hold: British Airways Avios bookings avoid the carrier charges that Finnair adds when you use its own program, which it put at €45 to €150 per passenger per flight. Finnair Plus members are guaranteed a minimum of two business reward seats per flight. And when the Qantas site does not show the full journey, searching Melbourne to Bangkok and Bangkok to Helsinki as a multi-city trip can still return the through price if the Bangkok stop is under 24 hours.

Points prices were listed then, but they are dynamic and the programs change them, so we have not reprinted them. Expect them to differ by program and date.

What to check before you book

  • The onward flight. Helsinki to the rest of Europe is a short-haul sector, and the cabin there may not be what you pictured. Check what a business fare buys on each leg.
  • The fare, not only the cabin. A cheaper Finnair business fare can leave out seat selection and be non-refundable, and an agency listing put seat selection at $150 to $250 per long-haul flight on the cheapest fare. The fare classes guide explains how the fare letter affects changes and refunds.
  • Your entry rules for Bangkok. On a single Finnair ticket you stay in transit and your bags go through. On two tickets you re-check bags and need to meet Thailand's entry rules.
  • The schedule. It is new and subject to approvals, and times differ between sources, so confirm the days and times on Finnair's site.

Common questions

When does Finnair start flying from Melbourne to Helsinki?
Finnair's first flight is due to leave Helsinki on 25 October 2026 and reach Melbourne on 26 October, subject to government approval. Melbourne Airport describes the service as starting on 26 October, so confirm the date on Finnair's site. The service is a daily Airbus A350 flight with a stop in Bangkok.
Does Finnair fly nonstop from Melbourne to Helsinki?
No. The flight stops in Bangkok. Total journey time is about 22 hours from Helsinki and about 23 and a half from Melbourne, including a stop of around an hour and three quarters.
Is Finnair business class on this route lie-flat?
Yes, in the sense that the seat converts to a flat bed. Finnair plans to use its AirLounge seat, which does not recline: you raise the leg rest and it forms the bed. Reviewers describe the bed as long and wide, but check the seat before you book.
Can I buy just Melbourne to Bangkok on Finnair?
Yes. Finnair has fifth freedom rights on Bangkok to Melbourne, so it can sell that sector by itself as well as through to Helsinki. That makes it useful as part of a two-ticket trip.
How many Avios or points does Finnair business class cost?
It varies by program and date. Point Hacks listed prices in February 2026 and advised checking British Airways Avios first because it avoids Finnair's carrier charges. Check the current price on the program's site.
Is Finnair a good way to get to Europe from Melbourne?
It is a credible one-stop option that avoids the Gulf, with a short stop in Bangkok and onward connections from Helsinki. Because the route is new, compare its price and total journey time with other routings on your dates before committing.
